College Planning

College planning begins as soon as you enter high school, if not before! Sometimes the toughest part of planning is simply figuring out where to start.

To help you get on track, we've put together a year-by-year action plan to guide you through the college planning process.

Freshman & Sophomore Years

  • Meet with your guidance counselor
  • Take challenging courses
  • Follow the recommended College Preparatory Curriculum
  • Learn about colleges and what they offer
  • Familiarize yourself with college costs and financial aid programs
  • Explore careers and majors that interest you

Junior Year
  • Meet with your guidance counselor
  • Explore taking AP courses
  • Identify college characteristics that are important to you such as cost, location, size, affiliation, program offerings, etc.
  • Familiarize yourself with the financial aid process
  • Prepare for and take the ACT and/or SAT
  • Visit college websites
  • Attend college fairs and information sessions
  • Begin visiting colleges over the summer

Senior Year
  • Meet with your guidance counselor
  • Begin narrowing your college choices
  • Schedule fall college visits and overnights
  • Retake ACT and/or SAT in the fall (if you desire)
  • Submit admission applications by Thanksgiving
  • Seek out scholarship opportunities
  • Submit the FAFSA after January 1
  • Beware of deadlines: admissions, scholarships, financial aid, housing, registration, tuition, etc.
  • Make final decisions by early spring
  • Participate in early registration and orientations
