Professor of Philosophy

Kent State University at Stark
Thomas M. Norton-Smith is a professor of philosophy and serves as the faculty council chairperson at Kent State University at Stark. He is also an enrolled member of the Piqua Sept Shawnee Tribe. Dr. Norton-Smith earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his master’s in mathematics from Pittsburg State University.
His professional interests include American Indian philosophy, logic, metaphysics and philosophy of mathematics. Dr. Norton-Smith also contributes to the ethical debate on the use of American Indian sports team mascots and nicknames. He serves on the American Philosophical Association Committee on the status of indigenous philosophers and on the Executive Committee of the American Indian Philosophy Association.
Dr. Norton-Smith’s publications include The Dance of Person and Place: One Interpretation of American Indian Philosophy (2010), “Vine Deloria, Sacred Places, and Circularity,” American Philosophical Association Newsletter on Indigenous Philosophy (2013) and “Ultimate Acceptability, Cultural Bias, and an American Indian World: Reflections on Nelson Goodman.” Enrahonar (2012).
