Funding Sources for Travel, Teaching & Research
- Stark Faculty Travel Fund
Funding for travel to professional conferences, performances and exhibitions. All faculty members eligible. Full-time faculty can receive up to $1,200 in funding.
- Load Lifts
Reduction in teaching load (typically 3 credit hours) to work on a project relevant to the applicant's research or teaching. All full-time faculty members eligible, with preference given to untenured faculty and applicants who have not recently received a load lift. NTT Faculty may only apply for teaching load lifts. Load lift applications for the upcoming academic year are usually due in early April.
- Chautauqua Workshops
Application form available in Dean's Office. Funding for a training program of more than one day duration (short course, seminar, etc.) All faculty eligible. 100% funding available for appropriate workshop. Funds will be taken out of your $1,200 allotment.
- Faculty Professional Development Center (Moulton Hall)
Provides support for a variety of programs involving technology, including equipment mini-grants, professional development projects and the Moulton Scholars Program.
- Farris Family Innovation Fund for Early Achievement
The Farris Family Innovation Fund for Early Achievement, a special endowment created by Kent State alumnus David J. Farris, ’60, and his wife, Jill, supports innovative, multidisciplinary work among junior faculty members at the university. As a result of the Farris family’s $1 million gift in 2002, faculty who are working toward tenure are able to apply for grants of up to $10,000. - University Research Council
Supporting a variety of research activities, applicants can receive from $100 to $2,500 ($3,500 for projects involving undergraduate students) for materials, supplies, travel expenses, conferences, publication costs and guest speakers.
- Community of Science (COS)
Database of announcements for grants, fellowships, awards and more from around the world.
- University Teaching Council
Supports and encourages outstanding teaching in a variety of ways, including travel support, Teaching Conference and Development Grants, Workshop Grants and Summer Teaching Grants. Full- and part-time faculty eligible.
- Regional Campus Summer Awards (Professional Development, Teaching Development, Distance Learning)
Application forms and information available in the Dean's Office. Summer awards of $10,000. Regional campus TT faculty are eligible, with preference usually given to those early in their career, except for the Field Experience Grant which is for tenured faculty only. Applications are usually due at the beginning of the spring semester.
- Teaching Scholars for Early Career Faculty
Faculty Learning Community program that promotes shared scholarly inquiry about teaching projects and builds relationships with student associates and faculty mentors. TT faculty in their first through fourth year of teaching at Kent State are eligible. Deadline is typically in April.
- Professional Improvement Leave (Sabbatical)
The university permits a tenured faculty member who has completed at least seven years of full-time service to the university and has the rank of assistant professor or higher to be freed of instructional or official responsibilities and granted a faculty professional improvement leave for the purposes of: upgrading professional skills; acquiring new skills; or intellectual and professional development that will be of benefit to the individual and to the university.
