Stark Bookstore Adds Webstore for Expanded ServicePosted Jun. 21, 2010
Kent State University at Stark students often cite the campus’s customer service as one of the attributes they like most about their college experience. The attentive faculty and staff consistently seek innovative methods to encourage the students’ success, realizing that their satisfaction with the environment in which they learn is a major factor.
Now students can add an online bookstore to that list. The new service became available in early June for students attending summer semesters.
“Within five minutes of notifying the students of the online bookstore through an e-mail, we had our first order,” says Debra Edminson, manager of Kent State Stark’s Bookstore. “We are now averaging five orders a day for summer 1 and 2 semester textbooks.”
Students who order their books online have the option of picking up their books at the physical bookstore, located in Kent State Stark’s Campus Center, or requesting them to be shipped to their homes – whichever is more convenient.
The online bookstore can be accessed from the Bookstore's homepage or directly from http://stark.kent.campuswebstore.com/. Faculty members submit their adopted textbook information for each course and the students enter the course and section numbers to purchase the required texts.
“This can be used as a great tool for students who are simply considering enrolling in a specific course, such as an English literature, and are curious about which books will be used. They can view the list of books to help them decide,” says Edminson.
In fall 2010, the Bookstore will expand their services again and present two new options in an effort to save students money on books. E-books will be available, as a download or through an Internet access code, for approximately 50 percent less than a physical, unused book. A textbook rental program also will be offered for a limited selection of books required for core courses. The students sign a rental agreement to return the book in reusable condition at the end of the semester or be liable for its cost. This increasingly popular program allows the book to be rented for less than the cost of a used book, according to Edminson.
Selected reference materials and apparel are also available from the online bookstore. The Kent State Stark Bookstore staff manages the customer needs of the online site and, as with the physical store, all monies that are generated by sales are utilized to support the Stark Campus students and activities.
