Definitions of Service-Learning
Some brief and basic definitions that can help faculty to determine whether their community-based projects are service-learning projects. Many faculty "do" service-learning without ever realizing it!

Service-Learning Handbook
This handbook can help to guide faculty to develop new courses or even just to learn more about what service-learning is.  The information here includes answers to questions about course design, assignments, assessment, community partnerships, and student learning.  Sample forms and other helpful tools are also included.

Service-Learning Best Practices
Adapted from the best practices suggested by Campus Compact, our Stark Campus model emphasizes the central components of service-learning: deep connections between academic learning goals and service to the community; reciprocal partnerships with underserved populations and the community-based organizations that serve them; ongoing and consistent reflection activities that help to make the service and learning relate to one another, and that helps to foster a sense of community engagement for students.

Faculty Reporting Forms
Faculty who are engaged in service-learning on the Stark campus report on their activities at the beginning and end of each semester. Use these forms to let the coordinator know what you're up to! Also available is a tool for self-assessment based upon our campus best practices.

  • Form #1
Use this form to report the status of your service-learning courses at the end of the third week of classes each semester. (Also available as a Microsoft Word file.)
  • Form #2
Use this form at the end of each semester to report on the outcomes of your service-learning class or project. (Also available as a Microsoft Word file.)

Assessment Rubric
This tool for self-assessment can be used in conjunction with the model for best practices to ensure that students gain the most from their service-learning experiences. For a range of tools for use in assessment, visit the online Compendium of Assessment and Research Tools (CART).

Course Development Worksheet
This worksheet provides educators with necessary questions to consider when developing a course that includes a service-learning component.
