Mathematical Sciences

Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Kent State University Stark Campus. Our 13 full-time faculty members (10 with a Ph.D. degree) and about 15 adjuncts are devoted to providing our students with the best possible math education. We are a group of experienced math instructors, highly qualified to teach a wide variety of classes, from developmental math to the senior level classes for math majors. Computer labs, math software, and other modern technology are integral part of our courses.

Almost all Kent State students have to take at least one math class. If you are a student thinking that you won't need math in your future career, please reconsider. You will certainly benefit from your problem-solving skills and the ability to think logically and express yourself precisely. Numerical and quantitative literacy is indispensable in the modern fast-changing world. Therefore, keep in mind that math teaches you all this and more. At Kent State Stark, you can satisfy the Math Liberal Education Requirements, get a Minor in Mathematics, or an Associate of Science Degree (Math Concentration), fulfill the requirements for the Middle Childhood Education Degree with Concentration in Mathematics (we had our first graduate from this program in May 2006), or complete the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science Degrees in Mathematics. We also offer developmental math classes which prepare you for college-level math. For careers in mathematics, visit the American Mathematical Society career site. Many mathematicians work not as teachers, but in the industry, government, insurance companies, etc. Teaching, nevertheless, remains one of the most frequent math careers. Students interested in high school teaching may pursue a bachelor degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in one of the mathematical sciences, with a minor in secondary education. Another possibility is to obtain a bachelor degree in education with a major or minor in mathematics. Either program leads to teacher certification in the state of Ohio.
